Treatment methods

Treatment depends upon the characteristic nature of the particular hearing impairment. A few different treatment methods are described here.

Children

Fitting with hearing instruments

When your child needs a hearing instrument, a hearing health care professional must fit the child as early in life as possible to aid in his/her best possible development.  Both ear should be fitted, and because children grow relatively quickly, the correct fitting will need to be checked at regular intervals.

Implantation of electronic inner ear prostheses (cochlear implants)

Using cochlear implants is advisable in cases involving bilateral deafness or whenever hearing instruments in combination with intensive hearing/speech therapy fail to achieve speech development. This method of treatment requires intensive logopedic and pedagogic follow-up treatment.

Reconstructive microsurgery

Reconstructive microsurgery may be a possible treatment for malformations of the outer and middle ear.
